Mary Charlotte Elia is a native of Hampton Roads who studied voice at Virginia Wesleyan College and received a certificate in church music from the college’s Center for Sacred Music before pursuing a Master of Divinity at Union Presbyterian Seminary. As a recitalist she has been featured in VWC’s Familiar Faces Concert Series and founded Liedermorgen, an educational series designed to introduce German language students to Kunstlieder. Elia has also produced several solo recitals of sacred music while often returning to her great love of German art song. Most recently Ms. Elia presented My Next Mistake, a program featuring selections chosen by audience members through a crowd-funding campaign.
During her studies at Union, Elia helped found and later led the Society for Patristic and Medieval Studies. A scholar of the earliest centuries of Christianity, Elia is the co-author of “Wisdom from the Early Church” (CMP) and is a frequent presenter at academic conferences and church workshops. A member of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Ms. Elia has served congregations as a preacher, teacher, and music director, and she currently serves as supply pastor at Belle Haven Presbyterian Church.
