Cantabile Project’s environmental recital will feature composers John Duke, Juliana Hall, Jocelyn Hagen, Steve Heitzeg, and Gwyneth Walker. Pianist Oksana Lutsyshyn will join vocalists Randall Criswel Ball, Polly Butler Cornelius, Marshall Severin, Cailin Crane, and Anna Feucht. Also featured will be the Old Dominion Percussion Ensemble directed by David Walker.
The cycle “Wild Songs” contains settings of the words of three well-known environmentalists: Rachel Carson, Jane Goodall, and Terry Tempest Williams. This cycle highlights inspiring new music with unusual natural instruments, creating sounds rarely heard in a concert hall.
“Songs of the High Sierra” (Gwyneth Walker) are based on the letters of John Muir which have been transformed into gorgeous, lyrical music that expresses the awe-inspiring beauty of Yosemite National Park.
As stated on his website, composer Scott Gendel chose Walter Berry’s poems for “The Space Between” because they “…so wonderfully articulate the peace and beauty of life on this Earth, as well as the constant onslaught of threats to that life”.
You won’t want to miss these beautifully written songs about a most urgent and important issue for our time.

January 28, 2018, 4PM at Chandler Hall, Old Dominion University

April 26, 2018, 7PM at Great Bridge United Methodist Church.
